Spray Tanning
The most common questions we get from our clients
Spray tanning provides a temporary tan color on the skin through an airbrushed solution containing the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone, known as DHA.
Spray tanning DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is the active ingredient in most sunless tanning products. It works by interacting with amino acids in the top layer of skin to produce a temporary bronzing effect. DHA is derived from plant sources like sugar beets and sugar cane and is considered safe for external use. When applied correctly, spray tanning with DHA can provide a tan without the need for UV exposure.
The spray tan solution includes a bronzer for immediate color, however it can take 24-48hrs for the color to completely develop on your skin.
DHA is considered very safe. Model Behavior uses a formula that is also safe for pregnant mamas. We do recommend to consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Spray tanning has had a negative reputation for causing skin to appear orange due to the past use of DHA derived from carrots. But you have come to the right place! Model Behavior utilizes DHA sourced from coffee beans, resulting in a natural brown undertone for a more authentic color.
Spray tanning isn't just for special events; it can be a regular way to boost your confidence. Why not treat yourself to it weekly?
Even so, many people wonder about the best timing for a spray tan before an event or vacation.
Vacation - we suggest 1-2 days prior to departure.
Dances/Galas/Etc - we suggest 2-3 days prior to the event as the tan can take up to 48 hours to fully develop. This is also the case with the rapid formula - your tan will not be developed fully if you get it the day of the event.
Brides - First we suggest getting a spray tan for all your bridal activities, as this is a great time to test it out prior to the wedding - Engagement Party, Engagement Photos, Bridal Shower, Bachelorette Party, Hair & Makeup trial, and of course the BIG DAY! We normally suggest 2-3 days prior so it’s fully developed for the wedding and you will have color for the rehearsal dinner.
VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: schedule your spray tan AFTER your mani / pedi and all other beauty treatments. Your spray tan should be the last thing on your to-do list when getting pampered because you will not want to get any lotions, oils, or exfoliants on your skin to preserve the tan.
Pre & Post-Tan Care
Following these steps will be the key to having a the best spray tan!
Exfoliate! Exfoliation is the most important step to a successful airbrush tan. Ideally, exfoliate your skin all over with an exfoliating glove and exfoliating scrub. Don't forget your elbows, ankles, neck and underarms!
Shave, wax, or remove any unwanted body hair 24-48 hours before your tanning session. (We offer Waxing Services 😍). Shaving the day of your spray tan will open your pores which can cause “strawberry skin” (little dots of spray tan can settle into your pores).
Do not use any lotions, deodorant, perfumes, or oil-based products. Oils can leave a film on your skin that can block the even absorption of the sunless tanning solution.
Wear dark, loose-fitting long pants, a baggy shirt, and loose shoes or flip-flops to your appointment. Do NOT wear jeans, leggings, or dresses. Shorts are also not recommended.
You can wear whatever! Our technicians are here to help you feel your best! We understand that everyone has body insecurities, but rest assured, we focus on making you feel confident and comfortable - ABSOLUTELY NO JUDGEMENT!!
With that being said, feel free to wear a bikini, bra, thong, or go nude! We offer disposable bottoms, tops, hair nets, nipple covers, and hair ties. Please be aware that you will have tan lines with whatever you decide to wear.
Before beginning, we will discuss your desired color and darkness to ensure you are feeling confident when the session is complete! You will be guided through various positions to stand, as the technician applies the airbrush tan.
The entire process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and off you glow!
The PERFECT TAN is 50% us, and 50% you!
Once your Spray Tanning Session is complete it is important to note that DHA is clear - your initial color is an instant cosmetic bronzer that you see upon application is like makeup! This bronzer may smudge or crease and appear imperfect. It is important to note that it takes at least 24hrs to see the full result.
Avoid sweating or getting wet until after your first rinse.
After your spray tan, your spray tan artist will tell you when you should rinse. For your first time in the shower after your spray tan, rinse with ONLY water! NO soap, NO scrubbing!
Rinse until the water runs clear - use your hands to make sure all the bronzer is rinsed off. Again, your full result won’t show until approximately 24 hours post your first rinse, so be patient, as it’s normal to be lighter after that initial rinse.
When you get you full shower, avoid using a loofa - since it’s like an exfoliating mitt, it will strip your tan. Instead, use your your hand to encourage all of the bronzer to be washed off. Avoid steaming, hot water - the hotter the water, the more drying it is to your skin which will cause your tan to fade faster or create a crackle / botchy effect. Wait a full 24 hours from your first rinse until you shave again and use a brand new blade as using a dull one will cause your tan to fade.
Keeping your skin hydrated is a key to the longeveity of your tan. Check out our tan EXTENDER lotion, as it helps moisturize and extend your tan another a few days.
Our SELF TANNING MOUSSE is a great option to use when your tan fades - especially for your face as that tends to fade the quickest.
Avoid the following as much as possible, but if you're going on a fun vacay to the beach, we have some amazing products for prolonging your glow in the water:
Ocean, hot tubs, and swimming pools.
Exercise/sweating for 24 hours, but please be aware that sweat may affect your tan even if you wait longer than 24 hours to sweat.
Perfume or any sprays for 24 hours
Dove, Dial, and Olay body wash or soap
Lotions or products containing oils and fragrance
For our CLASSIC tan, you may rinse anytime after 8hrs. You may leave on longer than 8hrs and rinse at your convenience.
For our RAPID tan, you will want to follow the instructions that your spray tan artist gives you. The RAPID tan is time-sensitive, meaning the longer it stays on your skin the darker the tan will develop.

**Something to note - when you rinse, your tan WILL NOT BE FULLY DEVELOPED. It will continue to get darker over 24-48hrs.
